“This conference follows-on from the 1st SA-AIDS Conference held in August 2003 and the highly successful XIIIth International Conference held in July 2000. The 2nd SA-AIDS conference comes at a very opportune time – when a number of care and treatment programmes have started and there is a feeling of optimism and hope. However, this opens up many new challenges and this is reflected in the theme of this year’s Conference: Unity and Accountability. Now more than ever we need to work together and share these challenges in order to turn the tide on this epidemic. We need to be accountable to ourselves, our partners, our family and friends and our communities so that we confront this epidemic honestly and purposefully. We also need to be accountable to our funders to ensure that limited resources are used for maximum benefit
